If you do not have enough hair to transplant into the recipient area, you can not get a hair transplant. The specialists generally harvest the follicles from the back of the scalp. If you do not have enough hair in this area, hair from some other parts of the body is okay too. If you have thinning hair, on the other hand, it may look more thinned after the transplantation.

Before getting a hair transplant, you should know what you should expect from the operation. Unrealistic expectations will lead to disappointment after the transplant. You can ask what you should expect to your specialist. Before-after photos may be helpful as well.

How is a Hair Transplant Done?

Hair transplants are done on an outpatient basis. The patients do not need to stay in the hospital after the operation. The specialists start the procedure by applying local anaesthesia. So, during the operation, the patient does not feel any pain. Then, the specialists harvest the follicles from the donor area. The harvesting process differs depending on the technique they use. In an FUE procedure, the specialists harvest the follicles one by one. On the other hand, in FUT procedures, they harvest the follicles from a strip of skin that they remove from the donor area. The procedure ends with the follicles’ getting transplanted into the recipient area. The whole operation takes between 3-8 hours. It changes depending on the extent of the operation.

Generally, FUE hair transplant procedures take more time than FUT procedures. Furthermore, in some cases, an FUE procedure may have to be split into a few sessions. But considering that it is the most advanced technique, it is worth the effort. FUE hair transplant procedures give the best results possible. The reason for that is, as the specialists transplant the follicles one by one, they can distribute the follicles evenly, which makes the hair look more natural. Does Hair Transplant Stop Hair Loss?

Risks and Side Effects of a Hair Transplant

Like every other surgical procedure, hair transplants have some side effects and risks too. However, the risks are too small and seen very rarely. The risks and side effects can be listed as:

  • Swelling in the operated area
  • Infections
  • Allergic reactions against the anaesthetic
  • Bleeding
  • Itching
  • Sensation loss in the operated area
  • unnatural-looking results
  • shock loss

Even though some are those issues fix themselves in time (like shock loss) some of them may necessitate a professional’s help. So, in order to avoid such problems, you should be very careful.

Before and After a Hair transplant

Before a hair transplant, you get a consultation appointment. During the appointment, the specialist will inform you about the procedure. In this process, you can ask anything that bothers you. He/she will also analyze your hair to determine the best technique for you. When it is certain that you are going to have the transplant, you should follow some instructions. If you are smoking, you have to stop a while before the operation. Likewise, you should not consume certain drinks, like coffee, tea or coke on the day of operation. Because consummation of those drinks can cause some complications during the procedure. If you want, you can take a photo of yourself before you undergo the operation. You can use that photo for comparison later when the results appear. Lastly, it will be nice to bring someone with you, as you will not be able to drive after the operation.

After the operation, you will be discharged in a few hours. You can go back to work the next day. However, staying at home for a few days will help a lot. You can both rest, and protect your head from sun exposure and traumas. You should avoid touching or scratching the operated area. It may cause infections and you may damage the follicles. So as not to damage the follicles while you are sleeping, you should sleep in a semi-sitting position.

3 days after the hair transplant operation, you can start washing your hair. You should be very gentle. Do not put your head directly under the shower outlet. Letting the water flow on the operated area is a better and safer option. After washing your hair, rather than using a regular towel, you can use a paper towel as it is softer.
