Other types of alopecia are alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis, alopecia barbae, cicatricial alopecia postpartum alopecia, and traction alopecia. The prevalence of some of them is not so high. But compared to others, alopecia areata has a bit more prevalence than others, as well as androgenic alopecia.

Types of Alopecia

Alopecia areta does not follow a particular pattern, unlike male pattern loss. In fact, it causes hair loss in patches. And these patches do not include only your hair, they could also occur in your body hair. Due to that, it is hard for people to realize it. Because it could occur in the body and not in the hair. In addition, it is an autoimmune disease. In other words, your immune system attacks you, literally. With attacking hair follicles, your immune system damages and interrupts the hair growth cycle.

Then it turns out you start to lose your hair temporarily, and sometimes, permanently. Although scientists do not know the reason behind that, some studies show that it could be genetic factors. The treatment plan reveals mostly by focusing on minoxidil, oral immunosuppressants, topical corticosteroids, corticosteroid injections, and so on.

There are also other types of alopecia areata. They are alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis, alopecia barbae. With modern technology, we could treat easily alopecia areata today. But in the case of being late, it could go through alopecia totalis. In this condition, you lose your entire hair. On the other hand, alopecia universalis is the rarest one. In this condition, you lose entire hair in your body, including eyelashes and eyebrows. Besides these, alopecia barbae is an interesting one. In this condition, you lose patches from your beard, not your scalp. Some people believe that if they lose their hair on their scalp, then it means they would lose beards too. But it is not true. These are two different conditions, there is no link between androgenic alopecia and alopecia barbae.

Effects of Inflammation, Birth and Tight Hairstyles

Let’s look at the rest of the alopecia types. In cicatricial alopecia, inflammation destroys hair follicles and some kind of scar tissue lasts behind. In this type, the aforementioned tissues remain under the skin. So you could only see them by looking at patches. Unfortunately, it is permanent. Because inflammation damages hardly to follicles’ stem cells and sebaceous glands. To treatment, usually, minoxidil is the best option.

Postpartum alopecia occurs in women, after giving birth. After birth processes, some shedding is normal, but excessive ones might be very stressful. But it is temporary, so if you make sure that you eat well and rest, your hair is likely to grow.

The last one is traction alopecia. It occurs due to keeping the hair in braids or so tight hairstyles for a long time. In this way, hair gets damaged permanently. For this condition, be careful about your hair structure. If you realize that your hairline starts to go back, then it is time to change your hairstyle.
