How hair transplants work

Over the decades, hair transplant procedures have evolved in both technique and efficiency. Today, procedures such as FUE hair restoration are the gold standard. The acronym FUE means the extraction of follicular units, which in turn refers to how the process works.

The FUE procedure was developed to address the disadvantages of its predecessor, a procedure known as FUT (follicular unit transplantation). Compared to FUE, for example, FUT procedures tend to have a more complex recovery process and more visible scars.

Is a FUE hair transplant worth it?

FUE is a popular hair restoration procedure for one reason: It works. Healthline reports that hair begins to grow in target areas within three to four months. In addition, it looks quite natural, in contrast to the FUT technique, which often leads to an unnatural hair-like appearance.

Who can benefit

Also, keep in mind that the procedure is not just a hair loss treatment. Patients with baldness in men and women can benefit from FUE, as can people who are unhappy with their hairline.

Age for hair transplant

There is no set age for FUE hair transplant. However, an important issue that seems to accompany age is the possibility of future hair loss.

Unfortunately, most men usually start losing their hair in their early 20s and, in extreme cases, their teens. Hair loss gradually worsens over time and the final picture varies considerably depending on genetics.

Male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, are both inherited forms of hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia owes its existence to an inherited sensitivity to the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone adversely affects the hair follicles and causes a process called micrograph. This procedure reduces the size of some hair follicles with each successive hair cycle. The result is thinning hair and baldness.

Sensitivity to DHT varies from person to person, which in turn affects the pattern and degree of hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia can range from something as harmless as a slightly receding hairline to a completely bald head. This makes hair transplantation futile, as you also have to deal with any future hair loss that will occur.

It is a difficult situation for them and refusing such patients in principle is not a wise choice. They will probably do it anyway in ruthless clinics with bad results. Our policy is to evaluate such cases individually before determining the way forward. We inform the patient about the risks involved and make a plan for the worst-case scenario. Finally, we perform the surgery if it is really necessary.

Donor area for hair transplant

Suitable donor areas for hair transplants are those that maintain permanent hair coverage for a lifetime. This way, the hair also remains permanent once it is transplanted into the recipient area. As a result, it is the best donor area used for hair transplantation.

Other viable donor areas include beard hair and body hair (chest, legs, arms, and pubic area). However, any transplanted hair retains its original characteristics. This means that body hair and facial hair will retain their color, curvature, and thickness. All of these characteristics can be very different from normal scalp hair. This is another reason why surgeons prefer donor hair on the back of the head. Other donor areas are mainly considered when the back of the head is inadequate or unsuitable.

A regular donor site will provide approximately 4000 – 5000 grafts in total. If necessary, more grafts can be extracted, but you should avoid any inevitable thinning in the donor area. Make sure you choose a qualified surgeon to avoid excessive scarring.

The surgeon must make a meticulous manual extraction of hair follicles and use the right piercing tool. This can lead to excessive investment in the donor area.

An exhausted donor area will have trouble growing hair and is full of scars, giving the wrong look to an FUE hair transplant that went wrong.

No amount of money will fully restore a depleted donor area. Therefore, you need to think very carefully about the hair clinic you choose and the quality of the service provided. Think about whether or not you can live with a bad outcome and ruin any hope of redress due to an exhausted donor area.

FUE hair transplant cost

Nothing is ever worth coming cheap and the same goes for hair transplants. Just think of everything that needs to go right for an FUE hair transplant to be successful. The surgeon must carefully collect individual follicular units without destroying them so that they are viable when implanted in the recipient area. All the while, the surgeon requires sufficient judgment to avoid excessive investment in the donor area.

Hair follicle implantation should also be done carefully to ensure that they grow later and that the resulting hair growth resembles the natural pattern of hair. This means that the surgeon must take into account the distance and direction of the hair follicles during the procedure. All this makes FUE an exhausting task that requires intense focus, specialization, patience, and art.
