When Can I Start Exercising Again After Hair Transplant Surgery

For the first 1-3 days after surgery, exercise should be kept to a minimum. If possible, you should even avoid walking anywhere. During these first few days after the transplant, you need to allow yourself to do things easily.

After the first week, you can start repeating the gentle exercise, such as walking. For now, avoid any kind of exercise that will increase your heart rate or make you sweat.

For patients undergoing FUT surgery, you should generally wait about a month before returning to your normal exercise routine.

Contact sports and weight training, four weeks after surgery will usually be an acceptable time to start again.

Surgical rehabilitation and exercise routine

After undergoing FUE, patients should be careful to protect their scalp. Activities that increase blood pressure, causing sweating or stretching of your scalp should be avoided.

This warning is especially important for people who usually have an active lifestyle.

Wait 14 days before returning to light physical activity

If you are a runner, you should keep your shoes off for about 14 days. By the end of these 14 days, you should be able to return to most of the normal activities you did before the hair transplant.

This is important to remember if you are training for a race or a run. Identify this physical activity gap in your training program for this 5K, half marathon, marathon, or hard mud.

Walking for the first 14 days

Although you can not run for the first 14 days after hair transplant surgery, you can still do very light cardio to improve circulation. Walking for the first two days is a good way to stay semi-active. As you approach the 14-day mark, you can increase the length and distance of your walks, although watch out for yourself sweating and overheating. Remember, you continue to heal.

As each patient’s needs and recovery process are different, be sure to contact our office to find out if you can return to specific types of light exercise right after the FUE procedure.

Return to execution gradually

Even if this 14-day window is over, that does not mean you can go back to full speed. It is important to return to your current routine to be very careful with the healing scalp.

Continue other exercise routines

While jogging may be approved after about 14 days, some types of exercise may not be approved at this point.

Light strength training is usually okay at this time, but major weight lifting routines should be avoided until the end of the four weeks. Swimmers will have to wait a little longer before returning to the water.

When can you exercise after FUE hair transplant?

Postoperative care is very important after a hair transplant. It is important to follow all the instructions given to you after the hair transplant procedure. But we have patients who constantly ask us what they are allowed and what they are not allowed to do after hair transplant surgery.

It is a good idea to remove for at least 7 days anything that will lead to excessive sweating or pressure and implant placement. Heavy lifting, running and most exercises will do both of these things. Any pressure on the head risks “transplanting” the transplanted grafts. Excessive sweating can cause irritation and unclean area. This can lead to infection and killing of the transplanted follicle. So taking 1 week out of your exercise routine is really worth it. You can hit the gym again after 7 to 10 days. Make sure you make an appointment with our surgeon after 1 week to make sure you are ready to continue these activities.

Your new implants and scalp are your priority after hair transplant surgery. Be sure to give them a chance to heal before returning to the track or treadmill. We can address these postoperative exercise concerns in more detail during the consultation process.

You can start washing the transplanted area after 48 hours using a cup of water to rinse the back of your head forward so that you do not get direct water pressure on the transplanted cuttings. We also provide a spray shampoo, so you do not need to rub the cuttings in any way. Just rinse using the cup of water, spray the shampoo, process it gently with your fingers into the hair, and rinse using the cup of water.

Another possible washing method is to use a sponge with baby shampoo and just squeeze the water and shampoo on the area. Rubbing this area is not an option for the first week! This also includes when drying your hair. Make sure your hair is dry after washing. It is okay to use your fingers or a comb with a large denture to style your hair as well. Just be careful to avoid contact with the cuttings.
