Should I get FUE Hair Transplant?

Should I get FUE Hair Transplant? Patients interested in having a hair transplant have many questions such as: What is FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction or Follicular Unit Excision)? How is the process performed? Should I get FUE hair transplant? How long do the final results last?

How does FUE work?

The follicles appear naturally in groups of 1-4 hairs in the area of the scalp donor. The FUE can be performed manually, mechanically, or automatically, depending on each patient

What are the advantages of FUE?

  • Significantly less discomfort or pain after surgery.
  • No linear scar.
  • Surgical wounds that are much smaller and less obvious and only take days to heal.
  • This extraction strategy allows a more uniform appearance of hair in donor areas that minimizes the appearance of baldness.

What are the disadvantages of FUE?

  • FUE is limited by the number of implants that can be removed/placed in one day. In some cases, a 2-day session may be scheduled.
  • The FUE depends more on the operator and requires good hand-eye coordination in both extraction and implant placement.
  • FUE transplants are more sensitive and require special care during handling and implantation.

Does FUE leave a scar?

There will be some small piercing wounds immediately after the procedure in the donor areas. After 2-4 days, the wounds will close and the tiny scars will be difficult or impossible to see.

Ideal candidates for FUE include:

Patients who prefer to wear their hair with a smaller style, as FUE does not lead to a linear scar.

Patients with a small donor area from which hair transplants should be removed or in patients with a tight scalp.

They have limited time before returning to work.

How much does FUE cost?

In general, the total cost of an FUE procedure is greater than the FUT strip per number of implants. FUE hair transplantation is also based on the technique used.

Is FUE painful?

Usually, patients have no pain during the procedure and after receiving anesthesia. They may report little or no pain after the FUE procedure.

During the FUE procedure, a sedative is administered followed by subcutaneous local anesthetic filtration. In rare cases, patients may experience some stinging or mild discomfort when administering the local anesthetic.

After the FUE procedure, we provide patients with mild pain medication such as Tylenol. Many patients end up not using painkillers after the FUE procedure.

How many grafts will it take?

Thick hair and cuts containing larger numbers 3 and 4 give the illusion of a fuller head. Unfortunately, this is genetically predetermined. We consider the patient’s goals and possible choices before determining the number of implants required during the initial consultation.

How long do FUE results last?

Also, hormonal changes should not affect implants. Some patients may see some thinning of their donor area as they age. In these cases, the transplanted hair could go through the same phenomenon. However, this does not apply to all patients.

What are the risks and complications of FUE?

Some of the most common complications of FUE include swelling, bruising, itching, and pain. There is also a risk of bleeding/flow as well as numbness of the scalp. A notable risk to mention is “shock loss” which is a postoperative hair loss that can be significantly reduced if patients continue/start prescribing medications given by the hair transplant surgeon and continue for a period of 6 months after surgery.

Will the new hair grow immediately?

Shortly after the FUE hair transplant, the new hair will look more like a beard on the head. Transplanted hairs can grow very gradually for 2 to 3 weeks before entering the dormant phase (telogen). During this phase, the hair shafts of most or all of the grafts will fall out. The transplanted hair will grow back once again as it enters the regeneration phase after 2 to 3 months. Once the hairs are in the aneurysm development phase, they will grow back to normal.

When will the final results be visible?

Once the transplanted hairs enter the regenerative phase at 2 to 3 months, the new hair will start as thin and fine hair. In the coming months, the hair will become longer and thicker. For a period of 10 to 12 months, the coarse hair will begin to become visible with the final results becoming visible about 12 months after the FUE. Keep in mind that each person is treated at a different rate and the results vary from patient to patient.

What do you need to know after the procedure?

The next day after the hair transplant, patients can return to our office for instructions on how to properly wash their hair after the procedure. Patients are asked to wash their hair twice a day for the first 4 days after surgery.

They should sleep in a semi-sitting position at a 45-degree angle to minimize swelling. Patients will be given a neck pillow for nighttime use to prevent accidental rubbing or movement of the implants during sleep. After the 4th day, daily activities can be continued, but intense exercise should be avoided for a whole week after the transplant.

Patients should avoid direct sunlight on the scalp implants for the next 6 months. Sunblock SPF 30 or higher should be used every half hour while swimming or out in the sun without protection. A cap to cover the scalp/grafts will be given to patients after surgery.

Should I get FUE hair transplant?

In your mind, should I get FUE hair transplant, if there is a question, this choice is yours. Choosing a hair transplant is a personal decision. However, the decision between the two types of hair transplant procedures depends largely on the patient’s ultimate goals. As FUE becomes more effective, more people are asking about FUE for hair restoration purposes. Issues that play a role in the final decision include how to style the hair, the patient’s lifestyle, and the quality of the hair. All these issues will be discussed during the initial consultation with the doctor.
